La Coupole, Saint Omer, France
A huge concrete dome that seems to grow out of the trees on the hillside near Saint Omer, France. Now over half a century old - you can only imagine the atmosphere, the fear the Russian and Polish prisoners must have felt while being forced to build this strange structure, and all the tunnels beneath it.
La Coupole is now a museum full of working models, plus a working model of La Coupole itself, two cinemas showing films and slides. You are guided round via an automated headset giving information as you walk round the tunnels and the dome.
